Gangtok: In a surprise move, both Congress and BJP came together to forge an alliance in Sikkim to fight Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) led by chief minister Pawan Kumar CHamling in the assembly polls due later this year.

Both the parties today formed United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance to field candidates in all the 32 assembly seats in the state.

The decision to form UDF was taken in a meeting of Opposition leaders like former chief minister and Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) president Nar Bahadur Bhandari, BJP president Hare Ram Pradhan, Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad Party (SHRPP) president A D Subba, Sikkim Gorkha Prajatantrik Party (SGPP) leader N B Khatiwada and CPI(M) state committee member Anjan Upadhyaya.

Senior Congress leader and former minister K N Upreti, who has been appointed as the Chief Coordinator of UDF, said assembly polls would be a direct contest between UDF and SDF.

Alleging fundamental rights of the people have been trampled in SDF rule of the past 15 years, he appealed to the people to vote for the new front.

Urging for "Parivartan (Change)", Upreti asked other opposition parties too to join the banner to prevent division of votes against the the ruling party.

"UDF's doors are open to all like-minded parties," he said.
