FOLLOWING the footsteps of Priety Zinta and Shahrukh Khan, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty along with her friend Raj Kundra has become co-owner of Rajasthan Royals for BCCI-backed Indian Premier League (IPL).
Shilpa bought 12 per cent stake in the Rajasthan Royals team with partner Raj Kundra for Rs 82 crore. The team is valued at about Rs 683.32 crore.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shilpa said it is an honour to be associated with Rajasthan Royals. "I completely relate it. My story is similar to Rajasthan Royals' journey to the top. The team was an underdog and became winners," she said.
Asked whether she would interfere as Shahrukh Khan had done with his Team Knight Riders last year, Shilpa said she wouldn't indulge in cricketing aspects, but chip in wherever possible like marketing and promoting Rajasthan Royal. "Probably my creative skills may come in handy to do this job better," she said.
Asked what led her to own an IPL team this year rather than last year, Shilpa said: "I was studying last year all about IPL and business opportunities it gave for owners. I will learn from Shahrukh and Priety's experience."
Reports say Shilpa will be investing Rs 100 crore along with Kundara. "This is the higest franchisee amount in the IPL so far," sources say.
Shilpa Shetty has also become the new ambassodor for Rajasthan Royals, sources added.
Rajasthan Royals is captained by Australian great Shane Warne and had won the inaugural IPL edition.
