Lawyers torch police van in Chennai

B D Narayankar

IN A fresh violence, agitating lawyers torched a police van stationed outside the Madras High Court Complex and abused media for bias here on Friday.

According to sources, the police van was dragged out of the premises of the court complex and set on fire by lawyers, who have been protesting against the high-handedness of the police in yesterday's clash with them.

Sources said that the agitating lawyers abused and threatened media for giving 'partisan' coverage on lawyers-police clash. "The protesting lawyers threatened to set our OB van on fire if we didn't move from the spot," a TV reporter said.

An urgent meeting of the lawyers affiliated to various associations was convened at the court complex to decide the future course of action.

As reports said that lawyers might intensify their agitation, large number of police personnel were deployed in all the courts to prevent any untoward incident.
