UPA allies in Bihar reach seats-sharing deal?

New Delhi: After hard bargaining, the major UPA partners in Bihar -- LJP, Congress and RJD -- appear to have reached an agreement on seat-sharing to save the "secular alliance" in the state.

Either fight unitedly or perish as the Nitish-Kumar led NDA government has made inroads into all three segments of UPA votes -- minority, Dalits and OBCs. If we contest alone, it will be a clean sweep for NDA," a senior UPA leader said.

Under the compromise formula, LJP can contest 13 seats, Congress 5 and RJD 22, sources said. Ealier, Paswan's party was pressing for 16 seats while Congress was asking for more than 10.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's surprise visit to LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan's residence last night to bless the latter's grand-daughter is being seen as significant in this regard. Prasad during his hour-long visit impressed upon Paswan the need for a united fight by the UPA in Bihar to "keep communal forces at bay", sources said.

"When our collective goal is to win general elections then why should we fight against each other.

We want to fight elections together," the RJD chief said today on being asked to comment on the visit to Paswan's house.
