In the backdrop of Congress cutting UPA allies'' wings to seek seats outside the states of their main turf, Samajwadi Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh met NCP chief Sharad Pawar at the latter's New Delhi house on Sunday.
Sources say that SP and NCP would join hands in Maharashtra ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
After the meeting Amar Singh said SP would support Pawar if the NCP chief is in the race to become India's prime minister after the Lok Sabha elections.
Amar Singh also claimed that the NCP has agreed to support Samajwadi chief Mulayam Singh Yadav if he wished to become the prime minister.
He also added that the Samajwadi Party wants an alliance with the Congress too.
Political pundits say the whole genesis of the meeting was based on the Congress Working Committee's (CWC) decision to stick to its pre-2004 position that the Congress would fight elections on its own except in states where it has a seat-sharing arrangement with UPA partners or allies.
In asserting this, the party has not only obliquely rejected NCP and SP's public posturing that constituents of UPA contest under UPA banner, but also avoided pressure from regional allies seeking seats in several states. Parties like SP, NCP and Paswan-led LJSP, in the recent past, have been demanding seats outside thge states of the main turf.
