DA case fallout: SP hurl papers at UP Guv

B D Narayankar

SP legislators went on a rampage hurling mikes and papers even as Governor T V Rajeswar read a prepared speech on the first day of the budget session in Uttar Pradesh assembly on Tuesday.

As soon as Rajeswar entered the assembly, SP legislators raised slogans and black flags, protesting against the failure of Mayawati government to react to the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and alleging that the governor was an agent of state government.

"Mayawati and Congress-led central governments are protecting the Uttar Pradesh governor," SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said after the assembly was adjourned.

Though Mulayam is officially flaying Mayawati's government, but under the carpet it was targetting the top Congress leadership for 'using' the CBI to target Mulayam in the disproportionate assets case.

With this uncalled for events unfolding in Uttar Pradesh assembly, it's clear that the emotional distance between SP and Congress has widened enough to make the prospect of an allaince between Congress and SP in Uttar Pradesh a near impossibility.

The SP has accused Congress for using CBI for keeping political rivals under its thumb. Substantiating this point, SP general secretary Amar Singh said the status report filed in the court has been taking divergent positions. “It takes one position when the SP is friendly to the Congress, but a completely different position when the SP is perceived to be hostile to the Congress,” he said.

Amar Singh drew the attention to reports in the media about a 17-page review report from CBI DIG Tillottama Varma disclosing that the agency had gone by allegations made in a PIL without verifying any of those with Mulayam and his family members.

“All the facts if taken into account in the representations will make out no case of disproportionate assets...The image and the reputation of the organisation will be in jeopardy if the representations are considered,” Ms Varma had said in the report.
