Vajpayee's health stable, but critical

New Delhi: The condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was admitted to AIIMS on February 3, following complaint of chest pain and breathing problem, is stable, but critical.

Vajpayee has been put on mechanical ventilation, doctors attending on him said this morning.

A medical bulletin on Vajpayee''s health released by AIIMS this morning said, Vajpayee will remain in the ICU on a ventilator as there were no signs of improvement in his health condition.

His blood pressure and kidney functions were normal, it added.

The 84-year-old leader still has lower respiratory tract infection and was being monitored by a team of doctors headed by Dr Randeep Guleria.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee this morning visited the hospital and enquired from the doctors about Vajpayee's well being. He also wished the him a speedy recovery.

Sources in the hospital said the next 24 to 48 hours could be crucial for Mr Vajpayee, as during that time his health condition might show some fluctuation.
