Vajpayee in hospital for chest infection

B D Narayankar

FORMER Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has been admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for chest infection tonight.

Doctors, however, attending on him say that the former prime minister was stable.

It's not that there haven't been other nagging problems. Vajpayee has undergone two cataract operations in the past and wears hearing aids. He has been advised rest thrice for sore throat.

He has also been living on one kidney since 1984. And the nation is still to forget the 1998 Independence Day image of Vajpayee who seemed to walk towards the dais at Red Fort in a daze, with a single slipper on. He was suffering from severe knee pain. Later
he underwent a successfull left knee joint replacement, which was performed Dr Chittaranjan Ranawat at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

In fact, Vajpayee's health was the key issue which smacked off lots of speculation when he was the prime minister. Prime minister's health is a key issue, but in his case it was extremely crucial as he was the only BJP man whom NDA allies trusted the most.
